How to get your child to exercise

It is a simple fact that some children just aren’t into sports but that doesn’t mean they have to be glued to the TV 24/7. Getting your child to exercise can be as simple as going for a walk in the park. Below are some tips on how to get your child to exercise.

Kid Fitness Tip #1: Think outside the playing field

Not all kids are drawn to team sports like soccer or rugby. Consider that their passion could lie in a physical activity such as golf, martial arts, running, swimming or dancing.

When your child is not having fun while exercising, it is time to explore different options. Ask them what they would enjoy instead of you trying to get them to do the activities you want them to do.

Kid Fitness Tip #2: Join in the game

Your kids love it when you play with them. Playing is an essential part of their development. Says educational consultant, Karen Walstra, “Playing is an essential part of growing up, children need to play to develop emotional maturity and social, intellectual and physical competences and life skills.”

Encourage the whole family to go on hikes or bike rides, play catch or throw a Frisbee around. You really don’t need any fancy equipment or classes to get your kids to be active.

Kid Fitness Tip #3: Limit screen time

A healthy amount of time spent watching TV is around one to two hours a day. This includes gaming and surfing the web. Encourage your kids to do activities to replace this 2 hrs of screen watching. Get them to play a game of tag or hide and seek or even get them to walk the dogs.

You can help get your kids to be more active but not allowing TVs to be in their bedrooms. If your kids have just become teens, limit the time they spend on their smartphones.

Kid Fitness Tip #4: Lead by example

Show your kids how to be active which means you – yourself – can’t sit in front of the TV for hours every day. Your kids will not respect the limits you place on certain things if you are doing those things.

You need to be a role model for your kids by incorporating physical activities into your daily life. Walk to the shops instead of driving, use the stairs instead of the lift and make sure your kids know how much you enjoy doing these things.
