What are the roles and responsibilities of people in a sporting organisation?

Fitness & Sport Management Blog

Each member of a sporting organisation has their own responsibilities that they need to carry out in order to help make the organisation successful. This includes financial management, participation, community engagement, competition results in addition to many other aspects. The people in the organisation need to reflect on the diversity of skills they have available and use it to their best advantage.

Directors

Directors in a sporting organisation need to act competently, honestly, in good faith and in the best interest of the organisation. If they aren’t able to do this, they are legally liable for compensating members of the organisation and other third parties who have suffered loss as a result of their failure.

They’re responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring the management of the organisation
  • Knowing the fundamentals of the organisation’s business
  • Remain informed about the organisation’s activities
  • Assessing the safety and legitimacy of the business’ management practices
  • Monitor the organisation’s affairs and policies
  • Maintain familiarity with the organisation’s financial status
  • Enquire into financial matters that need action or more information

Board members

The board of a sporting organisation helps to navigate the organisation toward its goals and through obstacles.

The board can consist of a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief People’s Officer or more. However, some boards only consist of volunteers.

These board members need to have the required business literacy skills in order to not put the organisation at risk when making important decisions.

Advisors

Sometimes, boards will hire advisors onto the committees to support them when making important decisions. These advisors use their years of experience and knowledge to give the appropriate guidance and input before big decisions are made and during periods of change.

These advisors can also assess and predict risks around making certain decisions and taking specific steps.

Their roles include:

  • Assisting the board with the organisation’s governance in addition to exercising due diligence throughout its operations.
  • Supporting the board in its strategic decision-making process by the review and provision of advice

They can provide advice about:

  • The integrity and reliability of financial, budgeting and audit reporting processes
  • The adoption of risk management strategies to manage and monitor current emerging risks that the organisation might face
  • The compliance of the organisation’s health and safety policies and practices
  • Protecting the organisation’s assets through the right business policies and practices
  • The effectiveness of ensuring compliance in the organisation’s internal control

Together, all these people are responsible for making the sports organisation as successful as possible. The directors are responsible for overseeing the entire organisation and the internal management thereof. The board members are responsible for managing the organisation and advisors can be appointed to give an independent, objective insight into the decisions and integrity of the organisation.
