What Fundamental Knowledge do you need to Understand Exercise Science?

The way the human body moves is a science. Unless the anatomy and physiology of a human being work perfectly, side by side, the way it’s supposed to, the human body won’t move and function the way it was intended to. This is why exercise science is the foundation that every great personal trainer relies on and why he or she needs to be 100% conversant with the principles of exercise science.

What elements make up exercise science?

There are many things that make the scientific study of exercise. These are – among others:

  • Anatomy,
  • Physiology,
  • Biomechanics,
  • Concepts of fitness, and
  • Nutrition.

Exercise Science Module 1: Anatomy

Medical experts at the US National Institute of Health define ‘anatomy’ as:

“The science that studies the structure of the body.”

On Trifocus Fitness Academy’s Exercise Science Course – in the anatomy module – you’ll learn about bones, joints, muscles and how these function together optimally in order to get the body to move.

Exercise Science Module 2: Physiology

While anatomy studies how the body is made up, ‘physiology’ – says neuroscience fundi Tim Newman – goes deeper:

“Physiology is the study of normal function within living creatures. It is a sub-section of biology, covering a range of topics that include organs, anatomy, cells, biological compounds, and how they all interact to make life possible.”

The module on physiology discusses (indepth) the various systems of the body and how they contribute to facilitating movement. These systems are:

  • The Nervous System,
  • The Cardiovascular System,
  • The Respiratory System,
  • The Cardiorespiratory/Cardiopulmonary System, and
  • The Endocrine System.

Exercise Science Module 3: Biomechanics

Biomechanics is the study that uses principles of physics to show how forces interact with a human body so that you – the personal trainer – will be able to design exercise programmes for your clients to the best of your ability.

Trifocus Fitness Academy’s module on biomechanics will teach you exercise science principles about:

  • Muscle actions,
  • Anatomical locations,
  • Anatomical terminology,
  • How joints move,
  • Planes of motion,
  • Force couples,
  • Leverage forces, and
  • The force weight relationship.

Exercise Science Module 4: Concepts of Fitness

The Concepts of Fitness module takes everything that you’ve learned up to now and shows you how you can use these in your personal training environment. The following sections fall under this module:

  • The FITT Principles,
  • The Three Energy System,
  • Motivation Techniques for Personal Training Clients,
  • Endurance/Cardiovascular Training, and
  • Strength Training.

Exercise Science Module 5: Nutrition

Every personal trainer worth his or her salt knows that an exercise programme is useless if the correct nutrition principles aren’t being followed.

This means that learning about nutrition principles is an integral part of this course.

In the nutrition module, you’ll learn about:

  • Food groups,
  • Energy that various foods – for example carbohydrates, protein, fats, etc. – supply,
  • How to read food lables.
