Believe it or not, there are fats that can be good for you! Did you know that the human brain is made up of 60% fat? What’s more, healthy fat is one of the elements that can help keep you younger for longer and increase your metabolism, helping you lose those stubborn kilograms. (You don’t need a certification in nutrition to see the benefit of that!) According to leading nutritional expert Patrick Holford, our diet should consist of 20% fat. Not the junk food non-essential variety of saturated and unsaturated fats that can lead to obesity, heart disease and diabetes but rather essential fatty acids like omegas 3 (fish oils) and 6 which are healthy, healing and absolutely vital for our bodies.

Many people have assumed that all fats are unhealthy, or that all the fats we need are readily available in the food we eat. Experts in the UK say that omega 6s are readily available in our diets, but they caution that we need to make an effort to include omega 3s in what we eat. Not only do omegas 3 and 6 feed our brain, nervous and cardiovascular systems but they are great for overall beauty and give us healthy skin, hair and nails.

How to tell if you are you lacking in fats that are good for you

Dry, flaky skin and other symptoms – that include low energy levels, poor memory and increased stress – are often the first sign that you aren’t getting enough healthy fat from your diet. Even, incredibly enough says Mike Kamo, not being able to lose weight could be a sign that you’re not getting enough good fat in your diet.  Inflammatory health problems like arthritis and water retention are also common.

Omegas play a pivotal role in increasing longevity!

The benefits of omega 6:

  • A healthy heart and nervous system,
  • Well-balanced hormones,
  • Keeps the blood thin,
  • Relaxes the blood vessels,
  • Lowers blood pressure,
  • Balances water retention, and
  • Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Benefits of omega 3 fish oil:

  • Good for cholesterol, helping you break down unhealthy fats,
  • Reduces the “stickiness” of blood,
  • Improves metabolism,
  • Instant benefits to the brain, improving your ability to think, learn and remember, and
  • Helps to prevent brain diseases later on in life, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Where to find these fats that can be good for you

Omegas are found in nut and seed oils as well as fish. While we need both omegas 6 and 3 in equal quantities, it is omega 3 that people most often lack. Cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are the best source of omega 3 because they are absorbed directly by the body. Vegetarians may enjoy the benefits of omega 3 fish oils by taking flaxseed oil instead. Omega 6 sources include raw nuts and seeds, legumes, evening primrose oil, sesame and pumpkin oils.

BE MINDFUL: When choosing your supplements ensure omega fish oils are purified and distilled, and that omega 3 fish oils are cold-pressed for optimal brain and body function. Also, make sure to cook at low temperatures too as heat damages essential fatty acids and can turn them into transfats, known as hydrogenated fats.

Omegas and children

Omega oils are incredibly beneficial to children. The benefits include:

  • Brain development, particularly in the younger years, and
  • Healthy vision, learning ability, coordination and mood.

The bottom line

Every living cell in the human body needs essential fatty acids to function optimally and because, the body cannot produce these fats naturally, we all need to be more active about ensuring healthy daily doses of omegas.
