The short answer to this question is “yes”! If you want to become a personal trainer, there’s nothing stopping you. However, a question that requires a bit more of an in-depth look at is “should I become a personal trainer”? To determine the answer to this question, we’ve got a couple of our own.  If you answer these with “yes”, then – as far as we’re concerned – you should become a personal trainer.

Should you become a Personal Trainer

Are you passionate about helping others adopt the fitness lifestyle?

It’s not just enough for a wanna-be personal trainer to be passionate about fitness. They must be passionate about helping others adopt the fitness lifestyle and ultimately help them to start on the road to wellness.

Clients come to personal trainers for all sorts of reasons:

  • Some want to lose weight,
  • Others want to bulk up,
  • Yet others have certain chronic conditions – such as arthritis – that they need the personal trainer’s help with.

They all have different mindsets. Some are super stoked to get started with their fitness routine, others are extremely enthusiastic in the beginning but need tonnes of motivation a month or two down the line because their motivation has gone. Yet others grudgingly come to you in the first place and are only there because a doctor’s told them that they have to come to you. Personal trainers have to take all of these types of people and have to motivate them in such a way that they end up loving exercising and motivate themselves to do it every single day.

Do you want to own your own business?

If you do decide to become a personal trainer, ultimately you will become a business owner. Owning your own business definitely has significant perks  such as being able to work when you want to or your salary being in line with the hours that your work.

However, there are also things that you need to deal with that you wouldn’t have had to factor in as an employee, such as regular bookkeeping and the more onerous tax requirements that befall business owners. And, there’s the added complexity of, in a quiet month, not earning the same as you do in a busy month.

Being a business owner is both liberating and terrifying at same time. You’re not obliged to be bum on seat, in front of your computer, eight hours a day. However, there are a lot of unknowns such as cash flow – something that you won’t be able to predict in your first couple of years as your business hasn’t established a pattern of good months and lean months. This means that you’ll constantly have to be marketing your business to make sure that you have a steady flow of income throughout the year. But if, for you, the pros outweigh the cons, you’re well on your way to becoming a business owners and personal trainer!

Would you like to see the world?

Being a personal trainer is a very flexible profession and translates well the world over. This means that if you are wanting to see the world and earn a decent income while doing this then becoming a personal trainer is a good career choice.

If you want to do this, we recommend that you obtain a personal training qualification that is recognised internationally. This will ensure that you don’t have to re-qualify if you decide to emigrate and will put you well on your way to maintaining – and possibly increasing – your earning potential.

As we said at the beginning of this article, if you answered “yes” to the three questions that we posed above then you need to become a personal trainer. However, what’s even better than just going a personal training qualification is doing one that equips you holistically to take on the personal training world and will make you into the best trainer you can be.
