It can be hard to know what you should wear to a group exercise class. Normally, you would opt for sweatpants and a t-shirt when exercising. But the clothes you wear should be able to support your body when you are putting it under so much strain. It is also important not to restrict your body’s movement.

The wrong clothes can increase your chances of getting injured.

There are different types of group exercise classes, spanning from cardio to water-based classes. Just like the exercises differ, the clothes you should wear to each type of class is different as well.

Different attires recommended for the different group classes

Cardio classes

Cardio exercises are designed to make you sweat by getting your heart rate up. Wear something that will keep you cool. You can also opt for fabrics that pull moisture away form the skin and are breathable.

Strength classes

When you are building and toning muscles, wearing clothes that aren’t too loose is optimal. You can watch your form without being restricted.

Some people wear gloves to help protect their hands against calluses.

Cycling classes

Wearing tight pants or shorts on a bike enables you to move freely without getting caught on the various mechanisms of the stationary bike.

If you plan on taking longer or regular cycling classes, shorts with padding in the seat can make the difference in your walk after class.

Some bikes might also require clip shoes which are also called cleats.

Dance classes

The more lenient of the classes, dance class allows you to wear whatever you are comfortable with. However, it can be helpful to wear a cross-training shoe that offers more support for lateral movements. They also have cushioning that helps relieve the impact of dance moves.

Yoga and Pilates classes

For these classes, you are encouraged to be barefoot. It is also wise to wear a tighter shirt so that your shirt doesn’t fall in your face or show more than you want when you are in an inverted pose.

Water-based exercise classes

Water-based exercise classes are usually in the pool among other swimmers. This means that wearing family-appropriate swim attire is crucial.

You can also wear clothes over your swimsuit, but they can weigh you down when exercising.

Water shoes are encouraged, but not required.

If you aren’t comfortable with your swimming capabilities, you can wear a life jacket. But it will also weigh you down.

The most important thing to remember when picking out the right exercise attire is that its not a fashion parade! No matter how comfortable you are with your body, other people generally don’t enjoy looking at intimate parts slipping out of inappropriate clothes.

If you are still unsure about what to wear, opt for a comfortable pair of tights and a not-too-tight-fitting tank top with trainers. You can also ask your instructor or anyone that works in the clothing department of a sports store for help.
